Gmail™ and GTray

Current version: (2.0.19) Download GTRAY installer(zip-only) New Beta: (3.0.0.3) Try it! GTRAY Beta Note: Latest GTray beta might only work on XP for now. I’ll work out the dependencies later, testing new function in the meantime. The previous beta can be found here. See Version Changes
I wrote this for my personal use, but if you want it, you can have it. I’m just not responsible for anything this software does incorrectly to your system. I have no documentation for it, no support, nothing, if it works enjoy, if not email me and if I have time, I might fix it. Also, Google has nothing to do with this application. I found it simply to be a great coding exercise for to me review my ATL/Windows coding. Did I say how much I love http://www.codeproject.com?. Here are all of the articles I used for this little application: Just in case you are wondering, your password is in clear text. I’m using encryption functions available in the Microsoft Windows Crypto Libraries to properly store your password in the registry. UPDATE: Since I’m super paranoid about security, I have made sure I’m doing safe ::GetWindowText() function calls and also I have made my dialog, PasswordSpy proof. BTW, I think I’ve made GTray require Win2K or greater (I love the nice Balloon Tooltips on Windows).

  • GTray does not show new mail notifications?

Possibly GMail™ changed their server logic and GTray needs to be updated. First, download the latest version and try. Second, post a comment or email the GTray group and wait for the update.

  • GTray does not show balloon tooltips when new mail arrives?

Make sure your XP balloon tooltips are enabled. An article on the subject.

  • Encryption is not working, what do I do?

I looked into this and there’s no easy work around right now. Basically it’s MS bug (I believe). For now, it just won’t be saved in the registry, but you must enter it at least once. This mostly occurs on Win2K. Maybe I’ll make it an option, so the dialog is not annoying. I might also investigate a way to use other encryption libraries, but it might require more download, so most likely not.

  • Can GTray support multiple accounts?

    Maybe in the near future.

  • Can GTray support mailto registration?

    Maybe in the near future.

  • How do I uninstall GTray?

Right-click on the system tray icon and uncheck “Run at Windows Startup”, then it’s simply a matter of removing the gtray.exe from whatever location you first downloaded to.

  • How do I change the sound GTray uses for new mail notification?

Go to: Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Sound and Multimedia. Once there, look for the Sound Event “New Mail Notification” and change it to your new nifty sound. Note: this will change for all applications that are using the New Mail Notification sound as well.
