WordPress 2.2 == Atom API

I know that history is not on our side, but at least, the code is now in the trunk. James is fed up with WordPress, but it seems to be only because of the poor Atom support in it. Maybe, James will change his mind now that Matt has stated his position on Atom at least in two places:

Matt: I just checked in Atom API support to the 2.2 trunk, and other goodies around APIs and syndication.

I was totally caught off guard by Matt and Dougal as they took my work in progress (slow progress that is). I know that there’s a lot to be done, but hopefully we can make something happen to get widespread APP deployment.

It’d be nice if Matt got the name right. There’s already plenty of confusion about API vs. Publishing Protocol.

Hope you don’t mind too much that I picked up your code and ran with it. My current modifications are, admittedly, very messy, as I’m first and foremost trying to get it running on the wordpress.com servers, and the environment there is a little different than the average. This has caused me to liberally lace the code with debug logging and to do weird things with global variables. Once I narrow down the particular idiosyncrasies, I’ll clean things back up. And as I go along, we’ll be checking changes into the main wordpress code trunk, as well.

My first hurdle was getting it to pass all the APE tests (albeit with some warnings). I can now create and edit normal posts, but I’m wrestling with some xml escaping as the data goes back and forth. Once I get that ironed out satisfactorily, I’ll try to move on to better handling of media resources.

Dougal, no worries at all. As a matter of fact, I was chatting with Matt that once I get back from vacation, I’ll gladly work with you guys to make sure the implementation is complete. Keep up the good work.

I’m in the process of putting together an interop event plan sometime around late March (around the O’Reilly Etech conference). It would be excellent if the WP support was ready to go by then
