   so wait 5 *ahem* more years for Vista to be productive/useful/compatible…. or use OS X now? doesn’t seem like much of a decision. OS X just works.

   Right, so for me at least Ubuntu can do almost everything I need at home, but color photo printing is not getting past my wife. Therefore, I’m just waiting until Leopard comes out to buy me a mini and take care of my marriage problems once and for all.

   It didn’t take 5 years for stuff to “just work” on XP, it certainly won’t take that long for Vista. (Actually it works just fine on all four of the computers I have running it, including one of them in x64, and only one application I use isn’t fully compatible [an ancient version of Visual Studio I'm forced to use].)
   
   Joel doesn’t seem to think Vista’s prettier UI, integrated search, much-improved security, gadgets, etc. outweigh the broad compatibility of XP. In that case, I don’t see how OS X would be attractive either. OS X may have a lot of advantages over XP, but “compatible” isn’t one of them.

   Thanks Joe for bringing the balance to Joel’s and my rant. I’ll take back my exaggerated number of years, but unfortunately, I have not had your luck with Vista (at least folks around me). For example, pretty good/recent workstations from IBM with $3K video cards are not supported in Vista. There was a problem with either Vista not addressing all of the memory, etc. So I just can’t say that it just works. Eclipse/Flex IDE were crashing on Vista as well. Now they just crash less, but run great on XP. You are also correct that compatibility is not OSX strength, but I’d only run it on their cheap hardware (mini). Besides you can’t say that all of these features don’t look comparable to Vista’s.

   After a 9 month trip back into Windows world with XP, I’ve recently switched back to Ubuntu for both work and home. I thought XP was stable, and it certainly worked with everything, but, for some reason, on my T60 is locked up with some regularity, especially when docking/undocking, and when coming back from hibernation. I searched around on Google and fixed a couple bugs, but at the end of the day it was just

   not friendly enough on the T60! So I actually switched from Windows largely for stability this time around.
   
   I will say, though, that I miss MS Office XP. I haven’t had a chance to try Office 2007 on Vista, but Office XP really is nice.
